Tonight, my husband shouted from the other room that there was a huge storm coming this way and I better get outside and roll the windows up on the van. So, I get my shoes on and run out there and Im trying to get the windows up, but the electric locks are sticking. Meanwhile, the kids are standing at the window screaming "Mom, hurry up and get in the house. we don't want the storm to get you. You are going to get wet". They were actually fearful. Now a week ago it was raining and they wanted to stand outside and taste the rain. So, quite obviously their attitude on the rain had changed because Dad was yelling there was a storm coming. I happen to love storms! I like the Lightening and the rain and the wind, but I am scared to death of the Thunder. It sneaks up on you and scares ya!! Your kids are going to feed off of your energy though. So, if your not scared, chances are they will not be either

Frogs
I am a mom to 2 little boys. They are forever dragging in bugs and frogs to show me. As much as I don't want these little critters in my house, I do my best to be excited and ever so calmly encourage them to take them back outside. I always have my kids wash their hands when they come in the house after they have been playing. Something I have learned though, is that Frogs have toxins on their skin that could actually make my kids sick. So, if your little ones have handled frogs or turtles or bugs, have them come in and wash their hands immediately. Remind them that if they touch bugs or animals outside they need to wash their hands so they dont get sick. My 6yr. old is excellent about coming in and washing his hands now.

Campsite critters:
If you are camping in the wilderness, there will be critters everywhere. Depending on where you are, the different types of critters will vary. Little critters are attracted to the delicious smells of your fabulous campsite cooking. Usually raccoons and skunks will be the guys you will be contending with at night. As long as you secure your food and do not leave any food or trash exposed, they will skip right over your campsite and go visit your neighbor. Kids can be messy little creatures as well, so make sure you encourage them to clean up after themselves and not litter. As cute and cuddly as a baby critter looks, resist the urge to feed them or touch them. Feeding wild animals will just encourage them to keep coming back.

Leave the T.V. behind:
As tempting as it is, to drag a mobile television with you on your camping trip, you really should just leave it at home. Our kids these days watch so much television that they miss out on all the amazing things going on outside of the house. Your kids may complain and tell you that you’re a mean mom for not allowing them to watch their favorite cartoon, but they will get over it. Take this time to do something with your kids that they can't do at home. Roast marshmallows, find constellations in the sky, and tell ghost stories around the camp fire. The television will still be sitting on its perch when your kids get home. It will not miss them. Even if your swanky camper comes with a TV, resist the temptation to turn it on. If your children ask you why there is a TV there, tell them it is for checking the weather for storms. Tell them that the television is not equipped with cartoons.

Mom knows First-Aid:
Make a First-Aid kit a priority in your list of things to pack for your camping trip. A lot of places have kits already put together, but you can make one yourself as well. Your kit should include, band aids, antiseptic wipes, gauze pads, rubbing alcohol, medical tape, skeeter stick, tweezers, and clean wrapping material. This is used to wrap a wound. Most of your injuries will more than likely include splinters and scrapes. However, you want to be prepared for anything more serious or a wound that could get infected. There have been many times that a child finds a fishing hook on the bottom of a river and accidentally steps on it. This type of injury would need to be treated with antiseptic wipes and clean bandages. It’s always good to be prepared.

Mom knows how to fight those bugs:
Remembering to bring your OFF spray is a good start to warding off the pesky bugs at your camp site. I suggest spraying you and your family before you even step foot out of the car. The truth is that mosquito's do carry viruses that can make you sick, so get a spray with Deet in it. Once you get your campfire going, the smoke from the fire will keep most of the bugs at bay. If the bugs are still chewing on your throughout the day, you can buy some OFF candles to place around your campsite. These candles have citronella in it that will keep the bugs out of your area. Remember to close any food containers and clean up any sweet, sticky spills. Bugs love sugar and will be the first to find it at your campsite.

Mom is a clean camper:
Even though I fully understand that going camping = being dirt and gross, I just can’t accept it! I am OK with a little dirt here and there throughout the day, but there are some things I just need. I have left my spray bottle of bleach cleaner at home. However, I do take the Lysol surface wipes. These are great for wiping down picnic tables or even the tablecloth on the picnic table. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are a must. Everyone gets a clean shower at night after playing in the water all day. It will make you and the kiddos feel better when they climb in their sleeping bags at night. Take a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you to. You’re probably not going to have easy access to a sink to wash your hands. You will be cooking and cleaning up and in between all that a little hand sanitizer will make you feel better, even if it may do nothing at all. :)

Super Mom's dinner over a camp fire:
If you’re planning to go camping for more than 1 night, you will want to think about adding more the menu than hot dogs and smores. If you have a large cast iron skillet, take it with you.. It is perfect for cooking eggs and bacon and other pan fried food for breakfast as well as dinner. If you do not have a cast iron skillet, aluminum foil is mom’s next best friend. You can double up the aluminum foil and make a plate or bowl with it. You can cook veggies, garlic potatoes and even an apple crumb dessert. After you put your food in it, you fold it together and you can either place it right on the fire, or if you have a grill rack, you can put it on top of the grill rack.. Cooking time is probably going to be a little longer than typical. Camp fire meals always taste better though!

Super Mom's fish bait:
I remember when I was kid, when dad asked if I wanted to go fishing, that was my cue to go dig up the worms In the back yard. I loved it and it was FREE! Bait shops have fancy worms in foam containers that promise to catch the biggest and best fish. Let me just tell you that the worms in our back yard are the hardest working bait Mother Nature has blessed us with. It is a little bit disgusting to push a hook through a slimy worms wriggling body, but nobody said fishing was a clean activity. Be prepared to get your fingers dirty. Your kids will think you are the queen of the fishing hole if you are out in the yard digging up worms with them. When Monday rolls around, you can drop the kids off at school and head to your favorite nail salon and get your manicure. Chances are your nail specialist will think you’re a pretty cool super mom for sacrificing your nails for a little worm digging to!

How Mama makes Smores:
Traditionally, a Smore is made with a roasted marshmallow toasted and sandwiched between two graham crackers and a hunk of Hershey's chocolate candy bar. I always seem to prematurely melt the candy bars by leaving them in the car or in the sun. The next best thing to Hershey's bars is a tub of Chocolate fudge frosting. Spread some frosting on one of the graham crackers, roast your marshmallows to the state of ooey gooey goodness and sandwich it between your crackers.. Now enjoy!
